New Challenge on PRESANS : you are an Expert on microwaves, you can win 12 000 €

PRESANS has just published a new Challenge. The goal of this new Challenge on PRESANS is to deliver a White Paper on the damage and perturbation generation mechanisms due to High Power Microwave irradiation in stand alone systems.

The White Paper Challenge is a two-step process: Experts should submit an extended abstract and a short set of relevant data to PRESANS. The selected Expert will then have to write the full White Paper and receive a financial reward of 12 000€.

High Power Micrro Wave influence on stand-alone devices

Protection of stand alone devices from the microwave influences

For the localized communication, the wireless solution is prioritized instead of using bunch of cables, nowadays. The solution based on local WiFi network has its benefits, but also, some sensitive points too. On the radio emitter side, for energy saving purposes (also, for less environmental pollution), there is important to have very sensitive microwave receiver system. However, the very sensitive (high concentrated integrated electronic circuit system is very sensitive to the static electricity. Therefore, the stand alone devices have to fulfill two very crucial conditions:

  1. The electrical device has to be sensitive (for receiving signals from the radio station) enough to solve the so called shadow zone influences, caused by the building (especially by the armature of the building).
  2. To have proper security system to avoid possible electric shocks caused by static electricity due to the microwave (but also all other parasite EM wave: for instance, arcing, lightning) induced static electricity.

The first point could be solved with proper antenna system and sensitive preamps that amplify the signal induced in the antenna (by the microwave radio station). This unit also has to solve the problem of the electric shocks too (collected via the antenna system).

The second part could be solved on two ways. First, active security system is needed to protect the sensitive electronics from the short-time interval, high voltage electrical shocks. Mainly there are two types of hazardous effects: the supplier line has to have protection of the electrical shocks induced by different electromagnetic inductions. Also, the whole device should be placed into a “Faraday cup” (due to the very sensitive high concentrated integrated circuit system. This could be solved either, to use metallic housing, or to use thin metallic coatings of the house (or, to use proper plastics that when are mixed with certain metallic nanoparticles, becomes conductive).

How to develop such kind of protection?

To fulfill the above mentioned requirements, laboratory test are needed. One should develop certain circuits usable for very low signal receivers, together with proper electrical shock protections. Parallel to that, to develop certain housing cases that provide necessary “Faraday cup” protections for sensitive electronic devices.

Of course, there are necessary also some sensors that could detect the hazardous signals. This should be based on fast oscilloscopes, or some computer-program supported detectors. Skilled electro engineers are needed and a proper designer to design the housing. These elements have to be tested for each new solution, to avoid any non-predictable hazardous event.
